Baby Loss Service

Carried: a gentle Christian service for those who have experienced baby loss, Fri 10th October, 7pm

When she first knew God’s call to train for ministry in the Church of Scotland, Pamela woke one morning with a strange conviction: "I am Elizabeth". Struck by how matter of fact this was, and how sure of it she felt, she went to her Bible to read more about Elizabeth and ask the Lord what He was saying. What she heard came with powerful conviction: “What will be birthed in me is for the purposes of calling God’s people back to Himself.”

This metaphor became an important one for her in her sense of call. In 2022 she had her second experience of baby loss, this time taking two months to “complete”.  The due date of the child had been the date of her final review to qualify for ministry. The loss felt uniquely painful as all losses are. And yet, there remained an inexplicable sense of hope. It seemed that God would birth something else…

That ‘something else’ has proven to be a very precious ministry for those who have experienced baby loss. Her own loss led to connections with some wonderful, faith-filled women - Karen Palmer, author of the book ‘Jennifer’, and Judith Keefe whose website is ‘Under the Rainbow’. It has led to unexpected depth of connection as stories are shared and experiences honoured. She has been particularly struck by stories held for so many years by older people who did not receive the sort of care offered today.

We aim to hold annual services during Baby Loss Awareness Week, giving men and women who have had these experiences a space to sit and remember, alongside others. Many people are impacted by this issue. For some, they experienced loss during pregnancy, and for some their experience was at birth or during infancy. For others, there is the pain of infertility. For still others, there is grief remaining from painful decisions made in the past and a wondering about what might have been.

This year’s service takes place on Friday 10th October at 7pm in Barn Church. Everyone is welcome - male or female, of any age, and regardless of faith. There will be the opportunity to light a candle but no pressure to be involved in any way. No questions will be asked. If you want to stay and chat you will be welcome, though some people prefer to leave quietly.

Perhaps you know of someone who would benefit from the service but would appreciate your support alongside them to attend. Please do share the advert with any who might appreciate it, and please pray for those who may consider coming along. This ministry touches the experience of so many and helps to counter what often feels like societal pressure to keep quiet.
